The best thing for the animal you found would be to keep the animal at your location, as he or she is probably not far from home.

Pets 911 wants to make sure you know that some pets are microchipped, which means the owners information can be easily found by "scanning" the pet for the imbedded chip. To have the animal scanned simply visit your local veterinary office or animal shelter. Both will most likely scan the dog for free. It would be good to call ahead to make sure they are able to scan stray animals. If you are unsure about who your local shelters are, simply visit the shelters/rescues section of this site for a listing and phone number of those in your area.

Additionally, it is very important to report all found pets to your local city/county shelters since owners may search there as well.
